Living a lifestyle in fitness has always been more of a necessity than a choice for me. My involvement in youth sports all the way through high school introduced me to the many ways the body can be "in shape". So much so that indirectly, it masked the fact that I was living with a muscular dystrophy. It wasn't until a near injury as a young adult on the football field that brought me back to my sports physician. Who, in amazement, referred me to a specialist at John Hopkins for further diagnosis. There it was found that I had FSHD (Facioscapulohumeral Dystrophy). An incurable form of muscular dystrophy that would have me wheelchair bound by the age of 40.
That was in 2010 and I was just approaching my 27th birthday. Fueled with determination to beat the odds, I remained as physically active as I could. I even went back and started coaching youth track. Being a 3 time city champion, state, and nationally ranked high school athlete I had a little to offer to the youth for a for few years. Breeding a few champions I can be proud to speak of. Even though to my peers it seemed I was living a normal life, but the daily pains of living with a muscular dystrophy were always present and growing. I was constantly making adjustments to my workouts to minimize the pain of everyday activities. Small victories of alleviated pain allowed me to defy the odds. I'm happy to say that I turned 40 in 2023 and wasn't showing any signs of needing a wheelchair any time soon. Yet the daily the pain was still present.
It wasn't until I began my journey into Corrective Exercise that the constant aches and pains started to go away. As I started incorporating my new exercises in with what I already knew. I started to feel better in less than a week. After a month I could move and do things I couldn't do since I was a teenager. Corrective Exercise was my new way of living. As I continued to improve there was no doubt in my mind that if I knew then what I know now. I could have extended my athletic career to the collegiate level and maybe on the pros. Though that ship has sailed, a career in personal training hasn't left dock. I'm thrilled to embark on this endeavor and can't wait to see how Corrective Exercise can help you in your everyday life.
